Balakirev was a member (along with Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov) of the group of Russian nationalist composers known as The Mighty Handful (or The Five). He wrote symphonies, a piano concerto, overtures with Russian themes and the symphonic poem Tamara, (also known as Thamar). Balakirev music for the piano also includes the oriental fantasy, Islamey.
