A Flute Concert of Frederick the Great at Sansouci (by Adolph von Menzel)
The great German leader, Frederick the Great (1712-86), was a military genius but also was an accomplished writer and musician, who composed and played flute music.
The above painting was painted posthumously in 1852 by Adolph von Menzel, a superb painter of historical subjects. It shows Frederick playing the flute in his Sans Souci palace at Potsdam.
